Things to do for toddlers in London : a day out near Greenwich
Not far from Central London, Greenwich and the surrounding areas has lots of activities and attractions you can enjoy with your toddler. Find below a suggested day out with your toddler.
Getting to Greenwich is part of the fun….
If you are coming to Greenwich from Central London, consider taking the boat from Westminster. Or you could also take the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) which is great for budding train enthusiasts. The DLR doesn’t have a driver so you’re toddler can sit at the front and pretend to drive the train.
Greenwich Park
If it’s a nice day make your first stop Greenwich park. There’s a great playground, lots of space to picnic and for your toddler to run around, flower gardens and a boating lake. Head for the top of the hill to see magnificent views of the park, the River Thames and Canary Wharf.
National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Museum at the bottom of the park quite often has events on which are specifically aimed at the under 5s including singing and arts and crafts which are normally free of charge. Its worth checking the what’s on National Maritime Museum website to see what’s on before you go as some days there isn’t a lot on but on other days there is lots to do. There is access for pushchairs to this museum with lifts. There are also cafes and you can eat a picnic inside if the weather isn’t great.
When you’ve finished in Greenwich catch the DLR to Mudchute farm (the largest urban farm in London). The DLR is great for pushchairs as there are lifts at every stop and there is lots of space to park your pushchair on the trains.
Mudchute Farm
Mudchute Farm is free and there are lots of farm animals including horses, goats, cows, rabbits, chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep and Ilama. Read more about my visit to Mudchute farm when my son was 14 months old.
If you’ve still time or if the weather isn’t that great, get back on the DLR and head for West India Quays station. Get off here and make the short 2 minute walk to Mudlarks at the Museum of Docklands which is especially great for under 5s.
Mudlarks at the Museum of Docklands
Mudlarks has a small soft play area where you can pretend to drive a DLR train, climb up the play structure and go down the slide. There is also sand and water play. Make sure you give them a call before you go to check that Mudlarks is open as sometimes it is closed for school visits or birthday parties. Go to the Museum of Docklands website for more information.
